Welcome to the NYS Clean Energy Educator Institute! We are so glad to spend the next four days with you all exploring clean energy goals.
You will leave this workshop ready to teach your students about clean energy and the future career opportunities it provides through hands-on learning.

DAY ONE - JULY 24: Energy Grid Basics & Solar Power
8:00 AM: Check In & Breakfast
Each morning, participants will check in and are welcome to enjoy breakfast before the workshop begins.
10:00 AM: Introduction to Energy Grids, Power Generation & Storage
What is the energy grid? What is power generation? How can we store energy?

12:00 PM: Solar Butterfly Conversation
Solar Butterfly presentation.

Lunch provided. Go outside and learn about the Solar Butterfly.
1:30 PM: Solar Energy
Explore solar energy using the Vernier Solar Energy Exploration kit then apply the use of solar energy to a real world problem in a Solar Fountain Design Challenge. And if you're really feeling adventurous, try experimenting with multiple solar panels in your design!

DAY THREE -JULY 26: HVAC/R , Environmental Justice & Building Decarbonization

What is environmental Justice and why is it important to the climate change action? Create a lesson plan after reviewing the interactive map at Disadvantaged Communities Criteria - NY CLCPA and drop it in this folder.
11:00 AM: Energy Audit
Saving Energy Jamboard. Conservation vs. Efficiency: What's the difference? Use a Kill a Watt Electric Monitor to complete an energy audit and then explore your carbon footprint further at Your Plan, Your Planet and Carbon Footprint Calculator.

1:00 PM: Building Decarbonization
Get ready for a design challenge where you will collaborate and build a life size energy-efficient home! Energy House (Efficiency).

This evening tour is an optional activity to check out the Port as well as the Offshore Wind initiative. Closed toe shoes are required.

MEET YOUR PANELIST
Kathleen Marean
Lead Consultant, Environmental Scientist MSP
Kathleen Marean is an environmental consultant who specializes in obtaining environmental planning, federal and state permits and authorizations, primarily for onshore and offshore renewable energy projects in New York State. She also supports NYSERDA on multiple offshore wind planning projects analyzing existing resources and constraints for development. Prior to her role as a consultant, Kathleen worked as a fish and wildlife technician for NYSDEC and a fisheries technician for Cornell’s Biological Field Station on Oneida Lake. She received a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University and a M.S. in Lake and Watershed Management from SUNY Oneonta.
Jack Honor
Director of Development EDRF
Mr. Honor has been developing and building renewable energy projects in New York State for 12 years. Based in the Capital District, he currently leads EDF Renewables’ Grid Scale Power business in New York State, developing large scale renewable energy projects. EDFR’s pipeline of projects includes approximately 2,500MW of solar, wind, and energy storage projects located in New York State which will produce enough energy to power more than 600,000 New York households.
EDF Renewables North America is a market leading independent power producer and service provider with over 35 years of experience. The Company delivers grid-scale power: wind (onshore and offshore), solar photovoltaic, and storage projects; distribution-scale power: solar and storage; asset optimization: technical, operational, and commercial expertise to maximize performance of generating projects, and onsite solutions, through the Company’s PowerFlex affiliate, offering a full suite of onsite energy solutions for commercial and industrial customers: solar, storage, EV charging, energy management systems, and microgrids.
Anne Reynolds
Executive Director of the Alliance for Clean Energy New York
Since 2014, Anne Reynolds has successfully advocated for New York’s 70% Clean Energy Standard and a NYSERDA procurement program to support that mandate, the use of Index REC contracts, the development of an offshore wind program, reform of the permitting process, an improved interconnection process at the NYISO, and a renewed commitment to transmission planning. ACE NY has grown to include the New York Offshore Wind Alliance, a strong advocacy presence at the NYISO, an active energy efficiency program, and a growing project in transportation electrification.
Prior to ACE, Ms. Reynolds served as a Deputy Commissioner at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in the role of chief financial and operations officer, and as Assistant Commissioner for Policy and Planning, which included legislative affairs. Before DEC, she covered air and energy issues for Environmental Advocates of New York; worked at the Tellus Institute for Energy and Environmental Strategies in Boston, and at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region II in NYC.
Anne holds a Master of Environmental Studies from Yale University and a BS in Biology and Environmental Studies from Tufts University.
Alexandra (Alex) DeRosa
Program Manager Environmental Justice, NYPA
A passionate advocate for historically marginalized communities in New York State, her belief that education equals empowerment has informed her leadership of NYPA’s Environmental Justice STEM Program initiative. This initiative is designed to close the STEM achievement gap for students attending under-resourced schools. Alex has developed and implemented numerous STEM programs, including K-12 curriculum in electricity, climate change, renewable energy technology, electric transportation, and college and career readiness.
Alex also manages NYPA’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion P-TECH Program which provides high school students the opportunity to both develop technical skills training and pursue an energy-related Associate Degree at no-cost. As a native New Yorker, Alex’s personal and professional values are deeply rooted in her belief that all people should enjoy the benefits associated with green technology—regardless of the community in which they live.
Alexandra earned her master’s degree in Environmental Policy at Pace University in New York and bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics at the University of New Hampshire.
